About English Language Unit

As English is the medium of instruction at Dhofar University, there is a clear need to approach English education in a systematic, meaningful, and purposeful manner. The English Unit offers incoming students with low proficiency in English an intensive program to help them pursue their studies in the major of their choice through the medium of English with the aim of immersing them in the language.

Ten hours a week are dedicated to Reading & Writing, and ten to Listening & Speaking. Students take a midterm and a final exam. Grades are determined by exam results, as well as continuous assessment, portfolios, progress tests, and quizzes. The weighting for each skill area is as follows:

Level 1
FPE 101A (Foundation Program English Level 1)
Course Description:
FPE 101A is a pre-intermediate level English course designed to develop both English skills and good study habits. Skills taught include Reading & Writing, Listening & Speaking, critical thinking, and study skills. Learning outcomes are aligned with Oman Academic Standards. Upon completion, students transition to FPE 102B (English Level 2).
FPEL 100 (Foundation Program English for Law)
Course Description:
FPEL 100 is an elementary level English course for law students designed to develop both English skills and good study habits. Skills taught include Reading & Writing, Listening & Speaking, and study skills. Upon completion, students are expected to have attained an elementary level of English.
FPEA 100 (Foundation Program English for Arabic)
Course Description:
FPEA 100 is an elementary level English course for Arabic students designed to develop both English skills and good study habits. Skills taught include Reading & Writing, Listening & Speaking, and study skills. Upon completion, students are expected to have attained an elementary level of English.
FPES 100 (English for Social Work)
Course Description:
FPES 100 is an elementary level English course for social work students designed to develop both English skills and good study habits. Skills taught include Reading & Writing, Listening & Speaking, and study skills. Upon completion, students are expected to have attained an elementary level of English.
Level 2
FPE 102B (English Level 2)
Course Description:
FPE 102B is an intermediate English course designed to develop both English skills and good study habits. Skills taught include Reading & Writing, Listening & Speaking, critical thinking, and study skills. Learning outcomes are aligned with Oman Academic Standards. Upon completion, students transition to FPE 103C (English Level 3).
Level 3
FPE 103C (English Level 3)
Course Description:
FPE 103C is an upper intermediate English course designed to build upon FPE 101A and 102B and prepare students to achieve IELTS Band 5.0 or higher. Skills taught include Reading & Writing, Listening & Speaking, critical thinking, and study skills. Learning outcomes are aligned with and exceed Oman Academic Standards. Upon completion, students transition to their respective majors.
Criterion Level Remarks
0-32 FPE 101A (English Level 1) Students who (a) score 50 on the Cambridge English Placement Test (CEPT) administered by the Foundation Program at the beginning of each term OR (b) submit either an IELTS certificate with a band of 5.0+ or a TOEFL certificate with a score of 500+ are exempt from the Foundation Program’s English requirements.
